| Sandy, workloads, and traveling has
kept this site silent for a while, but lots of ultra stuff has been going on in
the background. Here's some highlights:
- Phil McCarthy has posted preliminary plans for the 2013 edition of
The Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition on
June 29th, 2013. He's also set up a website
(www.tgny100.com)
to keep us all posted as plans progress.
- ... and Richie at the Broadway Ultra Society
(BUS) has announced
plans for The
Queens Fat Ass 50K Run (with accompanying 30K) on Saturday, December 22nd, 2012.
Stay tuned for final plans. Update (11/25/12): Click
here
for Registration form and full information (pdf).
- Meanwhile we have been researching 2013 races for our
Ultra Race Calendar. Please let us know
()
about any of your favorite ultras for inclusion. In the mean time, if
you're looking for some local winter races, be sure to check out the
NJ Trail Series
2013 schedule.
- ... and of course, congratulations to all the ultra runners who completed the
NYRR NYC 60K
(traditionally, The Knickerbocker), and the
JFK 50 MIler in this November.
- Finally, Bob is doing the final checking of the 2012 NYUR Grand Prix Results.
The Final results and award winners will be posted here shortly.

|
| 9/24/2012

official NYUR Grand Prix records keeper (Bob Sherman) has already re-calculated the

|
| 9/23/2012
| Thanks to quick work from the
race director (Mike Tobin) and the Richmond Rockets, the
Staten
Island 6-Hour Ultra Marathon results are already available!
|
| 9/13/2012
| Again, this site
has been silent for a few weeks while I got busy on other work, but
here are a few Ultra News items which I should have noted:
- First off, it's time to plug the Staten
Island 6-Hour Ultra Marathon coming up on Saturday, Sept 22nd.
This can be a great competitive race (it's a NYUR Grand Prix event),
or a wonderful training experience (with full support) over a pleasant
2 mile loop course. New this year, there will be 2, 3, and 4 person
relay teams. Sign
up Now!
- Richie at the Broadway Ultra Society
had such a good time at the
BUS 6-Hour Pajama Romp that he's started planning another more
low key event in December (on the 8th or 9th). Stay tuned to this site
for the evolving details.
- For those of you who are looking forward to running 60K in November,
don't worry, the Knickerbocker is alive and well (on Saturday, Nov
17th)... the New York Road Runners just decided to change the name,
to the NYRR
NYC 60K. Registration
is now open... and it's still one of the least expensive ultras in
the area. No word yet if they will have a "Baggage" option :-)
- ... and finally, congratulations to the USA participants (including
our NYUR Grand Prix champion, Phil
McCarthy) on excellent performances at the IAU
World 24-Hour Championships in Katowice, Poland on Sept 8th and
9th.
|
| 8/6/2012
| We've processed
all the inquiries and checked all the score sheets again, so the Pajama
Romp Final Results are now in the books, and we've updated the
2012 NYUR
Grand Prix Standings (after
5 Events).
... and several of you have sent us photos for the NYUR Flikr page.
Special thanks to Donna Tabios,
Lucimar Araujo,
and Becky Tsai for sharing their photos with us all.
|
| 7/31/2012
|
The BUS
6-Hour Pajama Romp last Saturday is now in the books. Check out the
Preliminary Results
and
with inquiries.

| 7/23/2012
| Ultra news from
the last week:
- The Broadway Ultra Society will score The BUS
6-Hour Pajama Romp electronically this coming Saturday, so if you want to get in
on the action send in your application form NOW!. (Yep, the name has been changed
slightly but it's the same race)
- Last Monday (on July 16th) several area runners began the Badwater
Ultra Marathon... 135 miles in Death Valley. Phil McCarthy led
the park of our locals, and finished 6th overall in 26:52:01. Phil
has published a race report on his blog,
which illustrates why he and everyone who particpated (along with
their crews) deserves our hardy congratulations. Check the
full results & splits
to see the remarkable performances of our fellow runners.
- ... and the preliminary results are in for the
Vermont 100 Endurance Run. Of
special note, local runner Mike Arnstein finished in 13th place (18:46:23) just 4 days
after finishing Badwater in 31:04:55.
|
| 7/8/2012
| Plenty of important news today:
- First off, if you're thinking of running the BUS
6 Hour Pajama Run, PLEASE send in your registration
form
NOW... we are trying to get electronic scoring for this race, but
we need to have a minimum of confirmed registrations by the end of
next week (week beginning 7/16) to confirm a contract with the time
keeper.
- Phil McCarthy (race director of the GNY100) will be running in the
Badwater Ultra for the third time on July 16th... 135 miles in Death
Valley (that says it all). He is running in support of Project
Hospitality. If you'd like to help Phil in this worthy cause,
take a look at this Pledge
Sheet, or donate on-line.
- Speaking of the
The Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition
(aka GNY100), Phil has published a race report on his
blog.
- ...and finally, registration for the GLIR
6Hr/60th Birthday Run on October 14th is now open. If you are one of the birthday runners
(born in 1952) register early to get your name on the "commemorative" appareel.
|
| 7/2/2012
| It's been over a
week since the last runners finished The
Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition and I'm finally getting around to
highlighting this astonishing event (organized and directed by Phil McCarthy).
Words cannot describe how terrific this event turned out to be, so I refer you to
the event Facebook Page for
reviews and photos from the runners, pacers and crews who made this event so spectacular. The
2013 version of this race (Phil promises there will be a 2nd annual) will definitely be the
driving force in my training plans for next year.
In other news, be sure to register early for the upcoming
BUS 6 Hour Pajama Run on
July 28th. This will be a great way to get your long run done in the "cool" of
a summer evening.
... and we have the registration form for the
Staten Island 6 Hour Run presented
by the Richmond Rockets on Sept 22nd. As a new feature this year, the race can be run
by 2, 3 or 4 person relay teams.
|
| 6/22/2012
| Only 1 day to go
for The Great New York 100
Mile Running Exposition. We just added some printable maps and course
details to this site in case any of you runners, pacers, or volunteers
didn't get the latest emails from the race director (Phil McCarthy).
Printed copies will also be available at the start.
Good Luck to all participants... Have fun, stay cool, and stay safe!
|
| 6/18/2012
| Important Request:
There is an ordinanance under consideration by Community Board No.8
in the Bronx to dedicate (co-name) 228th Street as Ted Corbitt Way.
We at NYUR feel that Ted, the legendary NY (and international) ultra
runner and founding president of the New York Road Runners, more that
deserves this recognition and honor.
Support efforts for the passage of this ordinance are being coordinated by
Ted's son Gary. Please click
here to read Gary's
request for your support at the next board meeting on Tuesday, June 19th
at 7:30 pm. If you can attend please contact Gary to let him know you'll be
there, and get more details.
... and thanks to local ultra runner Grant McKeown for calling this to our attention.

| 6/12/2012
| Lots of news to
list here:
- If you haven't already seen them, check out the results from the
Comrades (Ultra) Marathon
in South Africa. This 56 mile race is a favorite with many local runners. Special congratulations
to Admas Beliligne, who became the first American woman to complete 10
Comrades and earn the perpetual green bib.
- If running 2 marathons in a day at Comrades doesn't impress you, check out the
progress of the ultra-ultra runners in the Sri Chinmoy
2012 Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race,
the longest certified foot race in the world. Starting on Sunday, June 17th, these Runners will
have to finish more than two marathons a day from 6 AM to midnight for 50 continuous days in
order to complete the distance in the allotted time.
- Coming up in July (16th) is another super hard ultra, the
135 mile Badwater Ultra Marathon.
Looks like lots of local runners and their "crews" will be running this year.
- ... don't forget Phil McCarty's The
Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition, starting
on June 23rd. This premier race will be something to remember. To
keep up with last minute changes, also check Phil's
Facebook Event Page.
- Finally, the Broadway Ultra Society (BUS) has provided the
information & registration form for the
2012 6-Hour Pajama Run
on July 28th. The race director (Richie) asks that you PLEASE enter early. There
will be no late or post entries.
|
| 6/10/2012

| Surprise! We've updated the
2012 Grand Prix Standings for 4 Events!
At this point Aaron Heath is in the lead of the men, and Jodi Kartes-Heino leads the women... but there's still
three more events to go so there's plenty of room for changes.
|
| 5/16/2012
| Our
LI
Greenbelt Trail 25K / 50K page has been updated with

|
| 5/13/2012
| The
LI
Greenbelt Trail 50K is in the record books, and the results
have been posted. Congratulations to all runners.
... and yes, we are behind in updating the 2012 NYUR Grand Prix standings, but will
be posting updates SOON!.
... and with apologies to our ULTRA ultra runners for our silence, be sure to check their extreme(ly)
great performance in the recently completed
2012 Self Transcendence 6 and 10 DAY races.
And while you're there, consider joining this group of super "extreme" athletes for
the 2012 Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race starting in June.
|
| 5/10/2012
| There's lots of news to highlight, so here goes:
- This coming weekend is the LI
Greenbelt Trail 50K. Online registration closes on Friday,
May 11th at 9am, but race day registration is also available. If you're
one of us procrastinators, be sure to dowload and read the Race
Instructions and the Course
Description.
- The Broadway Ultra Society has announced the 2nd annual
6-Hour Pajama Run on
July 28th (permit pending... but please save the date). Details mostly the same as last year,
but new pajamas, and starts 1 hour earlier (at 5pm).
- Thanks to our good friend and volunteer photographer, Lucimar Araujo,
we've posted hundreds of photos
from the BUS 6-Hour Run
/ NYUR 3-Hour Run on March 31st. She managed to catch EVERYONE
who participated.
- ... and for all you Sybil
Ludington 50K runners, be sure to read the
2012 Race Report: by David Farquhar.
|
| 4/24/2012
| The weather was
fairly nice ... maybe a little warm... for the Sybil
Ludington 50K last Saturday. Check our Results
& Photos page for times of all finishers... and pictures of just
about everyone. Congratulations to all finishers, and thanks to the
Taconic Road Runners
Race Directors and volunteers for once again organinizing this terrific event.
BTW, we will shortly be updating the Grand Prix standings for this event and the
BUS 6 Hour results.
|
| 4/14/2012
| In my haste to get
the BUS 6-Hour Run &
NYUR Awards 3 Hr Run Final Results posted, I forgot to mention that
Richie is getting corrected award tags printed and will mail them to
finishers with his next newsletter.
I also forgot to post a reminder about the upcoming
Sybil Ludington 50K.
You don't want to miss this scenic (and hilly) road race... it is a classic!
See you there next weekend.
|
| 4/10/2012
| The score sheets for
the BUS
6-Hour Run & NYUR Awards 3 Hr Run have been reviewed and re-reviewed, and
we've listened to all concerns... and the
FINAL Results have now been posted.
But, of course, email me at
and I'll re-check again if you still have problems. Also, please remember
to email me your pictures from the run(s) and award ceremony for our
phote gallery.
|
| 4/1/2012
| The weather was
damp and chilly but it looks like a good run was had by all at the BUS
6-Hour Run & NYUR Awards 3 Hr Run. The most difficult part was
the manual scoring process... some of the ever vigilant scorers wound
up with frozen fingers (and butts). We made some mistakes, but the PRELIMINARY
Results reflect a day long review which we think made most needed
corrections.
But just in case, please email me at
and I'll re-check the score sheets. We'll finalize the results and update the
NYUR Grand Prix standings asap, but it will probably take a few days. Also, please remember
to email me
your pictures from the run(s) for our phote gallery.
|
| 3/27/2012
| This coming weekend

us for these simultaneous events, click BUS

form.

same great event.
|
| 3/7/2012

| Just a few notes:
If you've been trying to contact Richie at the

call him directly at 917-620-3431.
Also, it looks like ultra runner, Michael Tobin, is going to bring back his
Staten Island 6 Hour Run
this Fall on Saturday, Sept. 22 (permit pending). We'll publish details here as soon

| I need to apologize
again for letting this site be silently passive for the last month.
Here's another quick catch-up:
- Firstly, rest assured that New York Ultra Running is in the process
of planning it's schedule of Grand Prix events for 2012. The currently
confirmed events are highlighted in blue above. The Caumsett
State Park 50K (scheduled for March 4th) is now open
for registration.
- I'm also in the process of updating the Ultra Race Calendar above, to include the
planned / confirmed dates for 2012. This is a work in progress, so let me know if I missed any races you'd
like to include (email me at
). Of course, if you don't see a race in our calendar, check the Ultra
Running Magazine's Searchable Calendar or, for local events and
training runs check out the
New York Trail & Ultra Running (Meet-up Site).
- The folks who have been bringing us the Holiday
Marathon Events (thanks Michael Arnstein and Michael Oliva) in Van Cortlandt Park have run into
a Parks Dept road block for Christmas day... but they've saved the day by re-scheduling
at a new venue in Tibbett's Brook Park (see
The Christmas Marathon Westchester
for the details).
- ...and finally, congratulations to all of you who completed the Knickerbocker 60K last month. I took
a few pictures, which are posted on the
NYUR Flikr Site.
... and, again, I'll try to stay more up-to-date in the future.
|
| 10/31/2011
| The New York Ultra Running 2011
Grand Prix Events (8) have all been completed... and the Final
Standings have been calculated and posted. Congratulations
to our 2011 Champions, Phil McCarthy and Jodi Kartes Heino... and to
all the other winners and age group champions.
Over the next few months we will be planning for an awards presentation in early 2012...
and for events to be part of a 2012 series. As always, your ideas and suggestions (like
especially any new ultras in the area) are always welcome and will not be ignored. Send
ideas to me at
. Thanks! ... and Happy Halloween!!

| Just a quick note on yesterday's
6-hour Grand Prix race on Long Island. The weather was pretty close to ideal
and the trail conditions were great. You can see the full results at
6 Hour - 60th Birthday Run Results.
Congratulations to all runners... and we'll have the 2011 Grand Prix
totals finalized and posted here soon.
|
| 10/3/2011
| An apology is in
order for the silence coming from this site for the last month, so I'm
sorry! A combination of work and personal "busy-ness" has kept me occupied
elsewhere, but here's a quick catch-up:
- First and foremost, congratulations to local runner Phil
McCarthy for finishing FIRST in the North
Coast 24Hr Endurance Run. Phil finished more than 153
miles to take the USATF National 24 Hr Champion title.
- Reminder: the last of the 2011 NYUR Grand Prix events is coming up
in less than 2 weeks... but there's still time to register (by mail
or on-line) for the
6Hour-60th
Birthday Run.
- If any of you have enjoyed any of the last year's Holiday
Marathon Events organized by Michael Arnstein and Michael
Oliva in Van Cortlandt Park, please read this article (Parks
and Retribution - The Riverdale Press), and if you too
are outraged by the NYC Parks Department's actions, please let them
know at www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/maildpr.html
or email the Commissioner of Parks, Adrian Benepe, directly at .
- Another apology: The results from the BUS
6-Hour Pajama Run WILL be published in the next Ultra
Running magazine issue, BUT we missed a deadline for them to print
pictures and a race report written by 2nd place finisher, David Ploskonka...
but here's the report anyway (Ploskonka
- 2011 Pajama Run Race Report)... thanks David.
... and I'll try to stay more up-to-date in the future.

| The hurricane has
been filling the news this whole last weekend, and we hope that whatever running you got
in was safe and enjoyable, but now it's time to start training for the upcoming Fall season...

swag waiting for you at the finish.
- It's a holiday weekend, so there's a Holiday Marathon (The

9am. It's a free run on a 6.56 mile trail loop, just come out and
run... you pick the total distance for your run. Also check out the

| It is with
great sadness that we inform you of the death last Tuesday (5/17) of
Bill Fischer, one of the New York area's most prolific ultra
runners, and supporter of ultra running events. Some of the highlights
of his ultra career include finishes at Western States, Vermont, and
winner of the 1990 BUS Grand Prix. He was also a frequent and dependable
volunteer at many BUS events. In August 2007, he ran his last ultra...
Ralph's Run... in memory of his good friend Ralph Balsamo.
Bill died after a long fight with bladder cancer. He is survived by
his 16 year old son. An informal memorial has been planned for this
Saturday, 5/21, at 11:30am in the Meridiana Restaurant (2756 Broadway,
south of 106th St in Manhattan). All area ultra runners and friends
are invited.
|
| 5/19/2011
| On a happier note,
congratulations to our 2010 NYUR Grand Prix Champion, Phil McCarthy,
who put in a outstanding performance in the 48 hour race at the NJ
3 Days at the Fair ultra series. His 257.34 miles total for 48-hours
broke the American record. WELL DONE PHIL!!

| Richie Innamorato of the Broadway Ultra Society
(BUS) has been off-the-grid for the last few months, but in a mailing to the BUS membership
today he provided some insights to the plans for the coming year. Quoting:
"I still hope to have a 2011 BUS season... A mailing will be distributed (in mid-February) ... (and) will
have more info about the 2011 schedule and membership."
"The first BUS event will probably be Saturday, April 2. It will be a 6-hour or a 50K. I do not
know at this time where it would be... the objective is to combine the NYUR Awards Distribution and
an ultra event at the same time."
Check back here, or on the new NYUR Forum for
the latest news. Please REGISTER
on the Forum, and give us your feedback about Richie's plans.

| To make this site more interactive and give area
ultra runners a place to recommend upcoming races, provide race reports, ask (and answer) general and specific
questions about ultra running and events, we are implementing the new
NYUR Forum.
This forum is hosted on ProBoards.com, which is used by many groups
like New York Ultra Running. They provide a secure environment in which
to post questions, ideas, comments (including criticism)... and receive
answers, ideas, and comments from fellow runners (and occasionally from
NYUR staff).
Initially, the forum is set up so that anyone (any guest) can read all threads and replies, but
to post replies or start new conversation threads, you will have to register and activate a user name (does not have to be your real
name... avatars welcome) with ProBoards. All information requested for registration is confidential and will not be shared
by ProBoards or NYUR... so please REGISTER now, and
help start the conversation going.

Ultrarunning & Trailrunning Society (GUTS) web site.
They sponsor a trail ultra on December 5th (the
Pine Mountain 40 miler) which offers a challenging run to help
ride out the New York winter.

to Byron Lane's contribution, we've started a Trail

more photos to fill it out a little... so please send any

BUS Trail Mix-up 6-Hour Results have been reviewed,
and finalized. Note: The race director (Richie) will be
indisposed for the next couple of weeks, so please direct

Congratulations to men's winner Byron Lane, and women's
winner Gail Marino. It was a great day for all (weather
wise... and the memory of all those hills is probably beginning
to fade as your legs recover). The collection of 41 ultra
runners logged a grand total of more than 1128 miles for
the day.
