Dear BUS Member,

BETTER NEWS: My mother, Pauline got encouraging results from her two tests. There is some blockage in one of her ducts, but not acute. Pauline is still hoping to attend the Forest Park 40-Miler on August 21 to hand out (and confiscate) the chicken. I thank you for your previous good wishes.

WORK NEWS: From May 17 to May 31, I was working 10-12 hours a day, including logging time on weekends to transfer all my job responsibilities to our St. Louis office. On the day before my scheduled departure, I attended a company function. I was then offered to do a 3-month by one of the subsidiaries. I accepted. The only down side is that I had to start immediately. That is why this mailing is another brief one. My time lately has been very limited. I also thank those who provided information of job possibilities. I might take a rain check on those offers.

ULTRA NEWS: Enclosed please find the (long-awaited) application for The Bridge Run, scheduled on Sunday, July 11. I have surveyed the course on only one occasion, and it will require some tinkering. Im going to conduct this event with a no frill flavor. But you still will be able to experience the bridge adventure. PLEASE PRE-ENTER, because an accurate number of participants will be needed to assist with the planning. Please also be reminded that post-entrants may not be guaranteed a ride on the bus to the Start. Remember the QUEST bus in 2002. The Pisa Tower had better posture. I wont over load the bus like that again, especially since the drive will include two bridge crossings to New Jersey. Please also arrive early, so we can start on time.

SAD NEWS: Maryann von der Heydt, long-time volunteer at Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) events and some BUS events, passed away on May 7 due to heart failure. She was 58. I have often lauded the GLIRC ultra refreshment stations coordinated by Amy Goldstein. Amy also has had some excellent help. It was Maryann. Maryanns natural instinct was to be forever kind and altruistic. She was always quick to lend a hand, even when not asked. I can fondly remember one such time at the Grand Prix Brunch, when Maryann quickly came to my aid to assist with the omelet distribution. She would constantly put others first. I often refer to a line, Its the giving that make you what you are. We all had the privilege to appreciate what Maryann was all about. Her passing is a loss for humanity. Our deepest condolences to her husband, Fred and their children.

OTHER NEWS: Fellow member Betsy Magee is announcing a 50K/80K ultra experience at Verbier, Switzerland on August 27. Call her at 212-876-2233 for more details. For those not aware, Betsy was one of the major parties for the Metropolitan 50-Miler and Kurt Steiner 50K to be a reality. Betsy gave a generous donation to offset many of the losses of the event. Central Park ultras are more costly than other races..The latter events were solely organized by BUS, but we were greatly assisted by New York Road Runners (NYRR). The NYRR has given the indication that they would like to be ultra-involved again. That would be great news for the ultra community. But please be advised that BUS will not be conducting the proposed Knickerbocker 60K in November. There has been talk of a joint effort by Millrose A.A. and Central Park TC with funding from the NYRR. BUS will provide some background assistance. I think the event can be successful under such a marquee.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS: The deadline to renew your BUS Membership has been extended to July 1. For those who have not received a 2004 BUS Membership Card, please call 212-496-3099 to request one. My bookkeeping is in disarray this year.

LAST CALL NEWS: The Joe Kleinerman 12-Hour will be going on hiatus after this year. Even though post entries will not be accepted, you still have time to enter. Call me at 212-496-3099 if you would like to still take part in the event and pay homage to Joe. As mentioned before, BUS will be making a donation to the Joe Kleinerman Scholarship Fund with the proceeds from the event.

WHAT ELSE NEWS: The next mailing will be the first week of July. I wont make any more promises about the content, since Im already 0 for the season. But the mailing will include applications for the Forest Park 40-Miler and the 40-Mile Relay to be held on Saturday, August 21. This event is planning to distribute a very special prize to each finisher. You may want to mark down the date. If 40 is too much, get some people together and try the relay. It could be fun. Also, dont forget the Wild By Nature Trail Run on Sunday, August 8. The event is a fun run not a race, and the distance is about 32 miles. This event is an ideal introduction to trail running and just a fun day in general. Im sure our next mailing will include an event flyer or you can call GLIRC at 516-39-7646.

Whatever is your fancy, I hope to see you in some capacity this summer. Please be reminded that we desperately need volunteers for the 12-hour on June 12, the Bridge Run on July 11 and the 40-miler on August 21. I hope you will be able to help out. Until next time, take good care.

cheers,
