Dear BUS Member,

 

Im not going to beat around the bush.no, this is not another political announcementbut I have been out of sorts lately. Too many things have been going on at the same time. But Im going to try getting back on track, ultra-wise. I thank you for your patience in the meantime.

 

Another disconcerting factor was having my work contractual services not renewed last fall. Before, I had a central location where I made/received phone calls, e-mails, faxes, etc. Now, my office has been in the car running back and forth to wherever. My correspondences lately have been delivered by a carrier pigeon. I can almost identify with Fred Flintstone (we may have the same tailor). The only difference is that my dietary restraints will not permit any brontosaurus burgers.

 

So, lets get started. The first order of ultra business is the upcoming Caumsett Park 50K on Sunday, March 2. This event is coordinated by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) and has always been a well-organized event. Almost every racing detail and perk is provided. Please contact GLIRC at 516-349-7646 for more information. Please also be reminded the Caumsett race is a National and Long Island Championship. Please make a point to be a registered 2008 USATF entrant. You probably can register on race day, and then can be eligible for a variety of national and local prizes in the appropriate age group categories. The race also is the season opener of the New York Ultra Running Grand Prix.

 

Attached please find the 2008 BUS Membership Application coupon. Please complete and return. The membership dues are the same as 2007: $15 for an individual and $20 for a couple or bi-polar wannabe but would greatly appreciate any additional donations. To also celebrate our anniversary, you can have the option to purchase a tee shirt with the 30^th anniversary logo and an inscription on the crest in memory of Ted Corbitt. The shirt is $10 each and please include your desired size on the membership coupon. The shirts will be available at the Queens 60 Kilo on March 29. If you do not attend that event, the shirt will be mailed to your home address, but you will be charged for the mailing cost.

 

Please process you membership in the very near future. Please print your e-mail address CLEARLY on the coupon. Recently, I have distributed several messages by e-mail (e.g. Teds death), but some of you did not receive such messages. The reasons were that your e-mail address was not legible on your membership application, or you did not submit a membership application or you dont have e-mail. Lets all try to improve that window of communication when needed.

 

The first event on the BUS schedule will be the Queens 60-Kilo on Saturday, March 29 at Forest Park. Enclosed please find a race application. This event was supposed to be the inaugural event of BUS in 1978, but was cancelled due to two snowstorms. That race was replaced by the Knickerbocker 60K. Please honor not only BUS history but ultra history in this area. Before 1978, there were only about a dozen ultras east of the Mississippi and just two in the Metropolitan area. Ultra opportunities became far more prevalent that year. It all started with the announcement of the proposed Queens 60-Kilo and the eventual Broadway Ultra Society. Please make every effort to attend and celebrate that ultra heritage.

 

The next mailing will be in about two weeks. It will include race applications to the 30^th running of the Sybil Ludington 50K on April 26 and the Long Island Greenbelt Trail 50K on May 10. Until, hope to see you at Caumsett and Forest Parks. Take care.
