Van Cortlandt Park Fat Ass Run - Sunday, January 2, 2011 - 9:30am
This run has been CANCELLED!
Cancellation Note from the Race Organizer:
Friends, I apologize for this late message but my New Years Run set for 9:30, on Jan. 2nd. has been compromised in several respects & must be canceled. I do plan on rescheduling for a January or February date.

I have to cancel because, firstly I have had a physical setback & I am unable to presently run and lead runners over the unmarked 19 mile out & back course.
And second, a trail report from Michael Oliva who, with Michael Arnstein is conducting a New Year's Marathon in Van Cortlandt Park at 11 AM on Jan 1 (Go to meetup.com/New- York-Ultrarunning/ for full info) reports that the conditions in Van Cortlandt Park are bad. And bad enough that they are adding non-trail 10 K. I also believethat another 36 hours of snow melt would make the trails very hazardous.

I had weighed an option to meet runners at the 245 train station & had out some kind of maps for the course but considering the added obstacle of the snow, ice & slush ruled against that idea.

The New Year's Day Marathon/ Half & 10 K will still begin at 11 AM with an added & adapted 10 K course & celebration afterwards. So I encourage those of you who were planning on the January 2nd run to run on January 1. I ran in the Thanksgiving Marathon at VC Park & Mike & Mike put on a heck of an event & you will have a geat time.

So apologies again & have a great New Year.

Original message from the Race Organizer:
Greetings, On Sunday, January 2nd, 2011 we will greet the new year with the 2nd Annual New Year's Van Cortlandt Park Fat Ass Run.

The Start Time will be a Fat Ass friendly 9:30 AM.

The Start Location will be the 245th Street & Van Cortlandt Park Station of the IRT #1 train.

The full Course will cover about 19 miles, taking in the paths & trails of Van Cortlandt Park, Indian Field Park & Tibbets Brook Park while also traversing sections of the John Muir Nature Trail, Old Croton Aqueduct Trail & the Putnam Railway Trail.

Last year the weather was particularly bitter & just 6 hardy souls ventured forth to crunch their way over the frozen trails. To see photos from last year go to newyorkultrarunning.org (NYUR Photo Archive) or inwoodhillrunners.org. (Photos)

Please note that several park restrooms were open last year but be prepared if they are closed. Reminder: This is a FAT ASS event with no entry fee, no aid, no whimps, no whiners & no awards.

Afterwards, we will rendezvous at the Short-Stop Diner at 245th St for good food, hot drinks & sobering resolutions.

E-mail, or Face-book me if you definitely plan to run.

Season's Best to All, good running & I hope to see you in the New Year,
